5 Favorites from June 2021
This past month has probably been the best I've had since March 2020. I'm fully vaccinated and ready to have the best summer ever. These are five things I've been loving lately:
1) Reading
There was a time during the pandemic where I thought I was going to read a book a week. It was much too ambitious for me. Some books I've read and love include the Goldfinch, Lessons from Plants, and Fear is Just a Four Letter Word. The first is a really beautiful piece of fiction, the second an interesting look into how we can learn life lessons through observing plants (very similar vibes to Braiding Sweetgrass), and the last a holy grail book for the modern businesswoman. My next read is Gone Girl, but leave your favorite books down below so I can add them to my list.
2) Sky Ting TV
I raved about Sky Ting in my last post, but it has truly changed my life. It is yoga without judgement and pretention. It is all about doing what feels good and leaning into that. I've been doing Sky Ting at least three times a week (lately it's been closer to five times) and because they have a range of class times and instructors it's easy to find a flow that's perfect for you.
3) Christy Dawn
I've been trying to switch my wardrobe to be more eco-friendly. Ideally I would buy from ethical, conscious companies and only natural fibers that don't add more pollution and microplastics to the water. My budget hasn't quite let me do that yet, but I have been adding to my Christy Dawn collection. Christy Dawn is a company based out of California that originally made dresses out of deadstock fabric (i.e. scraps that other fashion houses discard). They pay their workers a living wage (you can see who made your dress on the website!) and they have recently gotten into regenerative farming to grow the cotton for their own dresses. It's very cottagecore/prairie style-wise, but the loose flowing silhouettes are all I want during these warmer months.
4) Listening to something on vinyl
I got a record player for Christmas and it has been getting a lot of love lately. There's nothing better than putting on a record while cleaning or cooking or doing nothing. Having a record on always feels a little romantic and dreamy to me and makes me feel a little more special than having netflix on in the background for the thousandth time. Current favs: Golden Hour, Folklore, Women in Music Pt III
5) Outdoor dining
I've always loved outdoor dining during the warmer months. Growing up in Hawaii it was never something I did, but since moving to a state with actual seasons I try to soak in all the warmth I can during these months. I still feel a little weird about eating in packed restaurants, but have found eating outdoors delightful. It's nice to interact with a waiter and eat food that you didn't cook and maybe even order a drink and dessert. Restaurants are the one thing I missed most during the pandemic and I am so happy that I can go eat out safely again.
